What!? I thought this game had dedicated server software bundled with it. Can't one player just run the dedicated server on any ole machine they leave running?

Oh, I mean you can probably do that. If the server rental companies have figured it out then you could probably set it up for yourself. Just a lot easier for most people to rent for ~$15/mo rather than investing in a server machine at home.
