Probably need flint. Scoot around some meadow water (rivers or ocean), find some flint there, and that will unlock flint tools, weapons, and some workbench upgrades. Wood, flint, leather scraps, and deer hide are needed for the tanning rack.

As for pickaxe, that's unlocked from the drop from the first boss.
