That’s what I do, but it still is a server no? I mean I can choose to make it public and people can join it if I’m not mistaken? So what’s the difference between renting a server and just creating one via the game?

The rented server would be dedicated, meaning it's up 24/7. The hosted game on a local PC would end as soon as the host disconnected -- all other users' sessions would end.
