I started using the cheap wood horizontal posts as measuring and leveling tools for similar reasons when planning stuff out. Even if the ground is treacherous you can just prototype out some lengths/elevations you want first with snap to grid. This is why I spam build pit houses now, the walls & lower roof sections *are* the support. And they look good.
The only thing that kills me is leveling a piece of ground perfectly flat, making sure your foundation is all the same coloring when building a frame, and yet somehow, something inside will be asymmetrical as far as support coloration goes despite everything below it, and on the same level on the opposite side, being the same.
Like.. left side, second level.. everything green. Right side, second level.. everything green except this one random post or two in the middle that are somehow further up from the ground or something, despite the entire ground level being the same shade of blue.
Has happened to my last two structures using Core Logs/Beams as supports, kills me every time. Doesn't prevent me from building anything desirable, but just irks my OCD a bit.
