I had a similar thing happen when I was taming wolves. I had 2 in a pen and somehow one disappeared. Thought it was killed. 20 days or so later I return to the same area to find a wolf 97% tamed. I was, so happy. ... Almost lost him twice. Got him back to base with a quarter health left; And he was swimming half the journey.
