You'll need to do a decent bit of building, since the game favors people who set up outposts across the map. BUT it is perfectly viable to go for function over form... It doesn't take much to get set up with a serviceable no-frills base, and then you're done. iv been looking at this game since it started early access and im debating on buying it the problem i have with these survival games is i find for most of them the game is based almost entirely around the base building and there isnt enough pve elements... how is this game as far as pve elements go? is there decent charecter build options? is there dungeons rare loot worth farming for?
Plenty of PvE, although the game loop doesn't change much from beginning to end (or, beginning to middle since the end is a ways off.) BUT a bit of patience is needed, there is a lot of gameplay to be had but it's clear that the game isn't finished and we're not going to be getting frequent regular content updates. (but bug fixes, tweaks, and balance adjustments are steady, with a patch every 2 or 3 weeks, some small and some huge.)
No character builds. That's one of my biggest disappointments, and something I really hope is addressed in the future. Your endgame character is going to look and play exactly like mine or anybody else's, with the only difference being possibly a different weapon.
There are a couple types of dungeon, each type found in their own biome but even though they're procedurally generated they all look and feel pretty much the same and their purpose is to gather specific resources that are found inside. (while fighting the residents, of course.)
It's not a perfect game, but it IS a fun game with a lot to do, it doesn't really offer much that other games don't but it does an excellent job of bringing in familiar mechanics to create a fun ride that could easily keep you busy for 100+ hours, with the promise of more to come eventually.
