**I have one main base with everything, then I have small outposts for overnight stays and repairs near the resources I want to collect. But it looks like I will have to cut a road through the forest if I'm going to have to lug all that stuff back and forth in the cart.

A better option, and sorta the way the devs figured people would play it, is to set up your smelting items at the outpost near your dig site. Your smelter and coal kiln and workbench / forge etc, can all be broken down and reclaimed for a complete "refund" of materials and set up in other places, so you lose nothing to pick those items up... I mean unless you WANT to try to cut roads across the map each time you have to travel further and further away as you progress to new biomes.

Smelt your ingots etc at the dig site and use forge to craft your items. When you are ready to advance to the next biome (and new resources), simply break down the work stations and move them to the new area... repeat.

Of course place portals at each outpost so you can teleport home or teleport back to outpost if you happen to die, and need to recover your gear.
