never thought of transporting the base. i just loaded some ores into the boat (to get workbench, forge and all upgrades) and got a 2nd base near plains (where i have my windmill, spinning wheel and blast furnace)

that base is close to swamp though. so i don't need to think about getting more iron. so situations may be different for others.
