autosaves in the current EA game state take < a second until my world gets really, really trashed. After 10 or so bases and thousands of terrain edits and more, yea, it slows down to a couple seconds. It shouldn't be a big deal unless you are on older hardware; are you still using a rotating drive? that can make it a lot worse, esp if not maintained (defragged, clean).
