Find and make backup of your saves at C:\Users\Your Windows Account name\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate

Keep a backup of your saves every so often, just in case something goes wrong. Also your saves can be found by clicking the Player.Log button in the bottom left of the main screen.

Don't use steam cloud saving. Cloud saving can cause issues, however I never use it so I can't say if cloud saving is always the actual culprit.
