I think it is more the "getting them back" part that is working people up. When you respawn with 25 health and your gear is now across an ocean and two very less than safe bioms getting it all back is a horrible endevor. Even having a spawn point a 200 meters away can be a nightmare if the 2 star Drauger that killed you is still camping at on your gravestone. I had that happen once, since I had so much stuff that I needed the belt equiped to carry it I couldn't just Eikthyr sprint up to the marker, grab my stuff and then runaway.

Only time something compriable happens in Minecraft is when you die in the nether or End. And you have 100% possible health to run back and pick everything up, includding having your armor re-eqip instantly when you do. And all the mobs in the imediate vicinity of your gear despawned when you died. At least they did as of 1.8 which is the only version I still play.
