It's just not interesting to farm money to pay gold for an NPC to do something in the player's place, or that's how I see it, at least.
Honestly it's quite enough to get a second merchant-type NPC.
well tbh that post is all over the place.
at first he says "this wont happen" and then immediately after he says "may or may not"
so its a big "maybe" essentially.
i think some of the suggestions are a bit extreme, such as having NPCs built bases for you which is a bit over the top.
i'd be happy to have them function as guards (similar to wolves) or crewmen for the ship to sail faster during head wind.
i dunno... something reasonable, and it should be an expensive affair at that.
in regards to the argument that farming gold to hire them is not interesting, well, i could say the same for the merchant goods. its just a nice little side quest, basically.
once you've got everything you need from the merchant you no longer have a reason to farm gold, and i personally think that's a problem.
the game needs a small gold sink imo.
hiring a dvergr for, say, 4000 gold and then paying him another 500 every 6-12 hours (real time) would work. unless you pay him the 500 gold he wants every now and then, he won't do his job.
there, now you have an incentive to continuously farm gold after getting all the merchant stuff.
and due to the steep price and upkeep you basically wouldn't be able to afford more than 1-2 of them unless you cheat and spawn in gold with devcommands.
