The best way I have found to control enemy spawns is to dig a pit and trap greylings in it without killing them. Only so many creatures will spawn in a certain radius from you (this does not appear to affect wandering patrols), as such if you fill up all/most of the 'slots' with trapped greylings it keeps things pretty quiet and manageable.
