Development is extremely slow, it's sad really I have watched so many abandon this game. That being said I have almost 1000 hours and plan on playing again if mistlands ever drops. 1 word my friend mods. V+, Epicloot and Creature Level Loot Control are my go to when I run servers, I also like to turn off random events as I love to build and enjoy staying logged in when I'm AFK you can also find a mod to turn them off.
