I have had worlds where I found a copper area first. Other worlds where I couldn't find a good spot like that and ended up in troll fairly quickly.
Thing is you need cores to process the ore. So you kind are better off using troll to get the cores so you can do metal stuff.
I had one seed recently where there was no copper or trolls in any close area to the start point. I had plenty of black forest ... it was the terrain.. it was just insane.
A large uplifted landmass that was just full of deep ravines and waterways. As if a giant beast had clawed away the land into deep ruts.
I think the constant level changes made it impossible for any nodes or trolls to spawn... there just wasn't enough real estate to assign as spawn point.
Had to travel a long way before I found any copper but did find a good spot with lots of nodes.

The mushroom markers in the minimap are copper nodes.
This was a fairly open area considering how routed out the area was.
