I mean there is bad luck, but some of it is you.
if you got a swamp near a plains, find another swamp or give that border a wide no - go zone if its big enough to be save on another edge.
boating at night is high risk -- best to park if you are lost/ disoriented/never been there b4.
squito and serpent are easy bow kills, no one had a bow? The serpent takes a few hits but it can just barely catch a karve and hit it once for every 5 or so shots you put into it. The damage should be minimal.
This game requires you to be cautious and punishes you when not, even in best gear carelessness (no food, weak armor, whatever) will burn you.
