There's no need for a convincing animation. A ladder could work the same way the ladders on boats work. You interact with E and presto, you're on top. It's what we want, anyway.

Which gives me a chance to pitch short-distance portals, aka stealth portals because they don't make a lot of show and can be clipped into doorways where only a faint glow might be visible.
