It happens! Generally, you can outrun and escape serpents if you get a tailwind. Probably makes sense to give the plains a wide berth to avoid the deathsquito issue until you have better armor and food. The game definitely doesn't play well as a race to the end. There are lots of setbacks, and handling them is part of the experience.
