If you play on a server contact the server admin.

If you play solo then it sounds like you have left over mods or corrupted files.

Uninstall game

Manually go the folder and delete the game. You have to do this manually as an uninstall will not remove files it does not recognize it put in,

Reinstall game

Saves are in appdata so they should be safe. If you want to manually back up saves go there.

As others have said the smoke thing was a change done. Smelters, kiln etc need to be vented now.
