He means wear leather armor from the deers you have to kill. you need a couple of deer trophies and find the altar to summon the boss. the boss is very simple just use a flint weapon and a wooden shield. You can block all attacks with the shield. the drop the boss gives unlocks the recipe for the pickaxe
