Yeah I have the shingle/scale roof pieces, but what you say makes sense - in order to make the home's ventilation adequate I had to simulate a chimney via opening up a section to allow for the smoke to escape, thus the rain is what must be damaging the home. I suppose the real solution then is using proper chimneys for the hearths. Thanks for the clarification.
