It would prevent automatic item despawn for dropped etc items in it's radius, that could eat up some disk space on the save file and might even contribute to slightly longer save times. If you don't leave a bunch of stuff scattered around my guess is it shouldn't be a problem.
That's a very good point. I generally don't leave anything lying around, even stuff I don't want, I trash rather than drop. A mod that adds a trash item is one of the few mods I have chosen to use for this, my first, playthrough. (I have pretty bad OCD about tidiness, so just 'dropping things' is not something I like to do.)
you are not alone there - i also prevent dropping stuff around if i can
but sometimes i perform the "removedrops" command. especially on my village with a lot of workbenches around.
later on when a lot of creatures are around (fighting each other) getting drops removed is something that can save performance
so be careful with many workbenches and think about cleaning up from time to time
