Bait a troll from black forest. Stay near birch tree and dodge when he attacks. You can get fine wood that way without tools (ships in black forest or plains are super rare).
In black forest you can also destroy barrels and chair next to stone towers and get some wood like that.

If you are crazy enogh you can try mountain caves (not easy to find and you need a lot of campfires). Not to mention you can find metal there where you destroy stuff.
