What's wrong with that, is that it is a false dichotomy...Risky game-play should be rewarded.
Risky game-play + wise tactics = win + reward
Risky game-play + stupid tactics = fail + penalty
Whats wrong with this?
Doodle about in a black forest, discover that it's next to some Plains as you get murdered by a group of Growths who wandered to your noise. Hours of skill progress lost.
Same deal with agroing unknown deathsquitos when you're either ill equipped, or not expecting them (sailing / neighboring biome)
Not to mention random spawns and agros during risky actions, eg. storming into a fuling camp, pack of wolves etc. (have seen enemies spawn out of thin air relatively closeby).
I'd also love to hear some of your wise, risky tactics, because when people speak of wise tactics it usually boils down to kiting stuff with a bow, sitting somewhere unreachable with a bow... Generally exploiting poor AI using ranged attacks.
Personally enjoy stuff like agroing a fuling camp, then agroing a bunch of Growths in a staggered manner and see if I can't dodge both sides long enough that they start fighting eachother, and then fight the fulings 1-2 at the time as the fight goes on.
Feels risky, generally goes well unless deathsquitos manage to respawn and attack without me noticing, or something else nasty shows up out of nowhere.
Failure alone sucks, having to walk into fuling and Growth space with spare armor sucks and having to rebuff sucks, but they all feel fair.
Having my skills remind me for hours, as a gain levels I have gained before, is just demoralizing.
Do you know how much time it takes at the higher levels?
Dying at 75 skill takes you to 71, getting back up to 75 in f.ex swords requires somewhere in the realm of 800 hits, that's hits, not swings; that's over 8500 stamina spent to regain those mere 4 levels , assuming you hit a live enemy with every swing, and don't you dare take too many chances getting those hits in, because if you die again, you'll get bumped down another 3-4 levels.
Of course that's just for your sword skill, if you want Clubs, Bows, Blocking, Run, Jump, Sneak, woodcutting, pickaxes and whatever other skills might benefit your play-style, well, you just have to repeat that process for each of them, except some of them take even longer to level.
