They did an optimization pass on terrain that helped a lot of people. Still an issue in huge places and probably not something that can be fixed.
If your existing world is better or not only you can find out.
To address an old world you will need to run the devcommands to open up the console and use opterrain command to do what it can. Newer worlds after the fix do not need the command run.
