I already use the berm and moat, you're right, it works great against anything that doesn't fly, I was content with the raids until flying stuff started coming. As far as the draw bridge goes, if you leave a little gap using roof thatch panels over the moat the mobs can't path over it but you can still run back and forth, like having a ladder just off the ground, works pretty well.

I just use a single 4m core wood beam. I can walk over it but the mobs can't. I build floors attached to the single beam to take a cart over and remove them when I'm done.

I'd be worried about falling off the beam, into the moat with no stamina and getting eaten by the pit monsters, I've died or almost died so many times if I'd had just a liiiitle more stamina and I couldn't quite hop over my berm wall.
