As far as armor goes, it is good to have armor equal to half of the incoming damage as after that it stats suffering from diminishing returns. The biggeest mistake in bronze is making bronze armor, its a massive resource sink while proving barely more protection than troll armor while slowing you down. Bronze is also the most effort intensive because you have low skills and poor tools. yeah, just checked wiki - he like exaggerated a bit it seems. Still I'm kinda bored of mining just after bronze era and now that I've checked wiki I almost want to skip to plains biome already. I hope devs make something more fun for those 3 missing biomes - and pickaxe won't make its return
The second biggest mistake when it comes to ore is thinking you need to fully upgrade everything. Most items, but especially armor, only get minor stat boost from upgrading, while fully upgrading cost more resources than creating the item in the first place.
Armor upgrades beyond the base levels can be safety ignored and save a ton of resources. The upgrades are there for rewards for people who want to put the extra effort in, much like people can put extra time and effort into training up skills. In both cases however they aren't needed to progress at all. Once you have base level items for that biome you can take on the boss without issues.
E.g. Elder hits for 60, so having at least 30 armor is ideal.... which is basically bronze helmet (which doesn't impact movement speed) on level 3 and the rest troll level 2.
