Anything that has ever been within 500 meters from the player counts as explored and it will not be updated. That area is much larger than what you see explored on the map. However if you didn't explore much you will be able to find unupdated Mistlands fairly easily.

I built a small base on the shore, so good to know I'll just be able to jump right into it when it comes out
