I've seen this with a lot of games. Usually games that have been around awhile though, like ARK. Server owners will install some mods that normally make the game easy, but then they edit the config to essentially disable the mod. Your playing along, trying to unlock the items in the mod. When you do, you find out you can't really use them as the mod author intended.

Maybe there is some desire to just prank everyone they trick into playing on their server. To me it feels like an obsessive need to control other people.
