I've actually tested it as well and it seems like Crits can happen and that will cause the DoT to increase in damage, but having a non-crit happen after a Crit reduced the DoT damage for me.

Wait, what? There are crits in this game? I know theres a weak-neutral-strong system color-coded to gray-white-yellow for damage types but i never knew there was actually a crit mechanic? I could swear i kept hitting lox's and the dot damage went 27-36-44 or something of the sort.
I think what happens is that the dot fully runs out, and subsequent shots dont refresh it but they increase the dot instance damage until the debuff goes out?
