The personal chest is for multiplayer to keep a few items extra safe.
Only the person who built it can open it and to destroy it takes 3 minutes even with the best axe in game as it has 10,000 hp and it is resistant or immune to all damage types.
It serves no purpose for single player or playing with people you can trust/non-pvp environment.
