The furthest a a log carrying troll can hit is roughly 6 metres so set a perimeter this far from your base with core wood poles then being as your early game I'd dig a trench around your entire base.

Another strategy is to explore the coastline and find a small island that's not to near to shore and use a raft to set up a base on it, making sure the entire island is covered by work benches.
