Yeah carapace armor is iron set with a few teaks, basically it feels worse than padded or wolf. I, too, wanted a new ore type or atleast an alternate source for Iron.
And more weapons in general (no staves).

Er, there is an alternate source for iron. Quite a lot of iron, really. Try hitting everything with a pick and you'll find it.
