If you have Steam Cloud Save enabled, then, yes, it might do that for people with not so good internet connectivity.

The game is saving the entire world every few minutes over the internet on Steam's cloud servern, which is causing havoc with your game, especially if you're hosting it.

It is indeed highly recommended to turn off Steam Cloud Save feature globally in Steam's global settings, then move your character and world from the "userdata" folder of Steam to your local save folder in your user folder, because the game does not do that automatically.

Steam Cloud save has been known to be at least partially responsible for corrupted worlds.
