Once you get the rod and bait, you make sure you've got some stamina foods on you, go looking for a spot where you can see fish, cast into the fish, reel in to about 14 metres and wait for the bite, start reeling in immediately. Never cast into water that you can't see fish in because you will be waiting FOREVER. Fish respawn so you can come back to regular spots.

I'll add, though its a sort of exploit I think, if you lose a fish on your line when its only about 2-3m left, you can still dangle the line in the water and fish will be attracted to it regardless of distance, meaning that as long as the line still can touch water, you can pretty much instantly catch a fish. Do it fast enough and you can even catch a second before the line can no longer reach water.
