I'll admit I will sometimes have a hard time getting ore off my ships, in terms of building a dock, that the stuff won't just fall through. AFAIK only way to avoid it is to terraform a platform out of actual ground. Or shallow water below the ship/boat so you will be able to pick it up again. But it can be a hassle to land so that you can easily access f.e. a chest on the docks...
