I figured out my issue. My son plays his steam account on my PC from time to time. His steam cloud is activated. When he logs in, steam syncs up his cloud with my pc and undoes lots of work on my current world, as well as brings other worlds/characters back from deleted land. Hope this helps others. All users that share a system should deactivate steam cloud to keep from erasing other peoples work.
