Well, once you got troll armor, the greydwarves mostly cease to be a problem, except for brutes.

Spikes do work on Troll, you just have to be fine with that you will have to do a lot of repairs on the spikes and palisades. If you do your palisades far away to your house and lifestock, trolls will not be able to harm them, as they will be stuck there for quite a while, giving you the time to kill them.

Palisades are more sturdy then they look like.
