This is my typical preparation.
Core wood lower barrier to block any adds and boss.
Core wood upper level to put roof to block boss roots. They get pushed up to the roof when he spawns them.

You can set it up fairly quickly as well. The only tricky part is putting the core wood just inside the side of the pillar so you can connect them for a nice level area up top for the roof.
