Sure skill levels help, but your equipment is paramount. It's dirt easy to make bow. By now you should have killed about 1.72 gazillion Graylings and saved the resin. Use that to make fire arrows. Troll hate fire arrows. Kill your first troll and you've got a fantastic armor upgrade.
