Placing workbenches will prevent trolls from spawning in the vicinity. I agree, though, that spawns within render distance aren't ideal. They break immersion for me and leave me without the time I'm used to having to prepare, especially if I've been bumming around base with only crap food like honey and then suddenly a troll proves Spontaneous Generation theory correct.
