Hmm ... things I gleaned from your post, which was an epic tale..!
1) the first speed of a boat is rowing, which ignores wind more or less. You could have rowed against the wind.
2) but, rowing is slow. There is a technique called tacking where you grab the wind the wrong way at the edge of your sail and go a bit, then turn 90 degrees and do the same back the other way, zero summing the wrong direction vectors and faster than rowing move in the right direction. Its annoying, but effective and its how you do it IRL.
3) birch and oak are vastly distinct from beech visually. Oak is gigantic girth and birch is stark almost white. Both would have told you 'too hard' if you whacked them before bronze axe. So yes, observe different looking stuff (like berry bushes look different and not the same, so you grab a few of the new color) and try to harvest anything new looking. If you can't, note it for later. You didn't really have time to look around but the swamp trees look different too, hmm..!
4) someone surely said it by now but the swamp is biome 3 and possibly the hardest jump in difficulty to date. So it can be rough if taken casually.
5) portal unnamed is your buddy. Keep that one at home un-connected to anything. Then slap one down fast works.
getting stuff back ... you may want to just get some help or load your backup or something. Swamp alone is bad enough, but on an island, the darn leeches will swarm the boat and wreck it while you try to avoid all the other crap. There is an old bumper sticker from D&D ... sometimes, the dragon wins...
If you have killed some trolls, a set of troll armor is faster than bronze. A max upgraded club, troll armor is enough to do the job if you have good foods and can find a way to either fight 1-2 at a time or sneak to your body. But, it may be better to just call it a loss and find a safer piece of swamp to try after you lick your wounds a bit.
