What actually helped me the most was using the map tags to put the exact text of the portal label.

Portal "portanamehere".

I could open the map, refresh my memory on what a portal was name, change the one in my base, and bam off to the races. Also helped remind me exactly where those portals were in the world.

also, have one extra portal in your base with no name at all (blank). That way any new portal you drop instantly connects to it without having to put a label in. I use this trick to pop back to my mainbase when my inventory is full. My storage chests are right next to the portal, I sort stuff to the chests, and go back through the portal (& dismantle it).

if you're superparanoid, have another extra portal permanently named "mainbase" or something, for those times when you screw up and change a label my accident.
