I think the type of prefered weapon depends on the prefered combat style : Sneaking, two handed, shield, etc.
Myself, I'm happy with clubs or axes and bucklers. It combines enough damage and nice protection thanks to the shield.
And it depends if you play solo. With others, it can be interesting to have different ppl wielding different types of weapon. (I don't know for sure cause I play solo).
