That's what I have been basically trying to say as well. Maybe it's possible for the game to detect that troll X with attack Y has hit a set of walls of an height of Z and that height Z was large enough that attack Y should only affect/damage a single structural object (like the first one it hits). But I really don't know how difficult it would be to program that. It might be super hard for an issue that is easily avoidable in the future by doing what has been suggested here. while the clipping is defiantly a frustrating thing, its something that's prevalent in nearly all games.
Ark, survival evolved show cases how much of a joke it can truly be. Developers do the best they can, but there is no realistic system that sees the surface and player or NPC objects interacting with a solid object accurately.
For now, us players have to adjust to the sometimes maddening clipping issue in some games. maybe in the future a game engine will come out that can accurately simulate this. but for now. [...]
And as I've said too, the game is actually quite forgiving regarding material consumption and rebuilding things. (If we're talking realism, why does repairing your gear not require resources? I don't see OP complaining about that...) From what I know >everything< in the game completely refunds its materials, doesn't matter if it's destroyed by attacks or destroyed using a hammer. The only exception known to me so far are spiked walls (they only return their wood upon destruction, not their core wood though).
OP could have easily used the time that it took him to write his rant to simply deconstruct/destroy his single existing forge, replace it where it's needed, rebuild the sconce (with the 100% materials he should have gotten back from the one the troll destroyed), then deconstruct the forge again and replace it where it's originally been. So it's only a matter of time before someone here will tell him to "git gud".
