Just remember that the workstation radius is not like a force field or a cloak of invisibility. Enemies don't spawn in there, but they can spawn outside and move in to destroy your stuff. So you should put your stuff in a little hut with a closed door or set up a ring of palisades.

Despawning should take about 3 in-game days, IIRC.
