I usually dig a moat around the base or build on a tiny island. The last playthrough i tried a base without any defenses in the middle of meadows, meaning my base was open for attacks from all sides. And it worked well. Had to rebuild some parts of the base a few times, but I was prepared to do that anyway since i played without defenses.
