There is a mechanic that allows for non-cooperative play (wards), but the issue is with the way that world difficulty has been implemented. As you take on the individual bosses in the game, the entire game world becomes more dangerous. So in an open server one player or group of players could advance to the end and it would be almost completely unplayable for everyone else because end-game enemies would start spawning in the starting areas.

Thank you for your explanation. Yeah Isee hot it works. The game's basic mechanics weren't made for multiplayer, it's fine, I've still been enjoying the game so far :D
