You can have both a spell and sword equipped at the same time in Skyrim. Not in Morrowind or anything older tho.

you could have that in oblivion already. but you where still able to use a shield aswell. not the case in skyrim.

in morrowind you could jump trough the game and actually jump higher and farther and run faster etc as you leveled up. removed in casulrim cause dumbing down. oh and you could LEVITATE. also removed. skyrim is a bad tes game.
