In a permadeath run you don't want to engage in any combat that isn't overwhelmingly in your favor. Otherwise it is a fairly normal game with a heavily risk averse approach.

[edit]: and of course, given the odds, you don't want to spend a lot of time beautifying or making perfect; just want cheap, quick, and functional.
